Upminster and Rainham have had an abundance of respected shops over the years, so we have rounded up a selection that you may remember fondly.

From a Boots on Corbets Tey road, Upminster, in the 1970s, to an emporium pre-dating World War I, we have chosen a range of shops that made a mark.

A Boots chemist branch can be seen to the centre right.

According to Google, a Boots opticians remains open at 7 Corbets Tey Road today.

One reader on Facebook said in 2023 that Boots was practically the last store standing after 50 years, and recalled large bottles of coloured liquid in its right window.

Searson Brothers Emporium on Station Road, Upminster, in 1908

This is a postcard view of Station Road from 1908, according to Havering Libraries.

Searson Brothers Emporium can be seen to the left, a business which continued into the 1980s.

J Lyndle on Upminster Road South, Rainham, in 1969

This photo shows the premises from 23-29 on Upminster Road South in Rainham.

J Lyndle is one such, and though there is little information on that store, a clothes shop sits to the left and further to the right is Flints Stores.

Flints Stores was a grocer, drapers and general dealers which shut in the 1960s, according to Havering Libraries.

From 41-49 Upminster South Road in Rainham, Delins is the first shop on the left.

To the right you can see Sketchley Cleaners.

The shops, which were converted from Victorian houses, were later demolished, according to Havering Libraries.

J Cox Butcher on Station Road in Upminster circa 1920

To the right you can see the premises of J Cox butcher on Station Road circa 1920.

An early 1922 advert for the Upminster butcher read:"Best Brands only of Chilled Beef and Canterbury Lamb Stocked."

W Vinton on Back Street/ Upminster Road in Rainham circa 1905

The butcher was named after William Vinton, listed in Kelly's Directory in 1895 as Vinton & Keeble Butchers.

Mr Vinton died in 1908, just three years after this photo was taken, according to Havering Libraries.
