Havering is set to celebrate Armed Forces Day and will recognise the achievements of "our heroes", including those who fought in both world wars.

Armed Forces Day is being marked in Romford on Saturday (June 24) with a parade starting at 10.30am on South Street's junction with Arcade Place, finishing at Tollgate House.

Among those marching will be serving troops, veterans, cadets and service families.

Armed Forces Week began on Monday (June 19) with a flag raising ceremony outside Romford Town Hall attended by politicians.

At the flag raising, Stephanie Nunn, mayor of Havering, said: “From those currently serving, to veterans, cadets and service families, the sacrifice, hard work and courage our armed forces show in risking their lives to keep us safe should never be forgotten.

“We are proud to raise the Armed Forces flag in recognition of all our heroes involved in past and present conflicts."

Cllr Nunn reserved special praise for RAF Hornchurch pilots, who she said became national heroes in both world wars and Black, Asian and minority ethnic personnel from Commonwealth nations.
