A Metropolitan Police Officer has been found guilty of assaulting a teenager during an off-duty incident.

PC Paul Bewsey was charged with common assault following an altercation with the 14-year-old boy in Hanging Hill Lane, Brentwood, on April 21.

An Essex Police investigation ensued, with the officer charged several months later on October 1.

PC Bewsey, who is attached to the Parliamentary and Diplomatic Protection Command, first appeared at Basildon Magistrates’ Court on November 24, where he pleaded not guilty to the offence.

But at Chelmsford Magistrates' Court on January 23, PC Bewsey was however found guilty of assault by beating and was handed a sentence of a 12-month community order with 80 hours' unpaid work.

A Met spokesperson said the force’s directorate of professional standards is aware of the incident, and that that the misconduct process will begin in due course.
