Audiences can take a ride back to the golden era of Hollywood musicals with a band that promises to play the biggest hits from the 1930s to the 1960s.

The Jeff Short Swing Band will take to the stage on Sunday, August 19 at Queen’s Theatre in Billet Lane, Hornchurch, to pay tribute to great American composers like Rodgers and Hammerstein, as well as singing songs made famous by Frank Sinatra and Marilyn Monroe.

‘Golden period’

Band founder Jeff Short said that he admires the “greatness” of the songwriters from the period.

He said: “I feel that it is the best period of song writing in popular song. It was considered the golden period.”

Vocalists Jeff and Sue Short have worked in a number of big bands such as the Glenn Miller, Syd Lawrence and John Miller orchestras.

Their musicians boast impressive credentials too.

Neale Ridding, who plays the piano and keyboards, has worked with Des O’Connor and Michael Barrymore, and featured in the film musical Bugsy Malone.

Jazz musician Bill Yeomans has worked alongside Ray Gelato and Alan Barnes.

This will be the first time the band has played a full concert at Queen’s Theatre.

Jeff said: “It gives people a chance to hear some of the classic standards of years gone by.”

n Tickets are priced 18 – 16.50 for concessions – and are available by phone on 01708 443333 from the Queen’s Theatre box office or online via www.queens-theatre.co.uk.
