Joan Armatrading will be supported by an Essex artist when she plays in Southend next week.

Basildon boy Chris Hobart, 25, won a regional talent contest to be able to perform before Joan takes the stage at Cliffs Pavilion in Station Road on Thursday.

As part of a search for local singer-songwriters to accompany her on each date of her 2012 tour, hundreds of people sent demo tracks of their songs for her consideration.

Chris, who cites Damien Rice and Bon Iver as his influences and has played more than 1,000 gigs over the past eight years, is ecstatic to have been chosen.

“It’s the biggest gig I’ve ever played,” he said. “I want to have a career in music – make records and play around the world. I just need the right break. By having the opportunity to support Joan, hopefully I can make some new fans – which will open a few new doors for me.”

His mum, dad and girlfriend, long-time supporters who have been to almost all of his many gigs, will be there to see him open for three-time Grammy nominated Joan.

“I just hope they get tickets.” he joked.

Tickets for the show cost 28.50 from the box office on 01702 351135.
