Multi-talented performer bringing soul-stirring night of hits to Romford theatre

Well, not quite, but multi-talented performer Shenton Dixon will be in town with his one-man Legends of Soul show, recreating the looks, personas and voices of the icons.

The singer, who has appeared in several West End musicals and on TV shows The Voice and Eastenders (in his role as “Fat Elvis”), will be at the Brookside Theatre, Eastern Road, Romford, on February 27.

He and the Legends of Soul Concert Band will perform a two-hour show packed with hits including Never Give Up On A Good Thing, Wonderful World, Superstition and My First My Last My Everything.

“These are guys I’ve always admired,” said Leicester-born Shenton. “When I was at college I used to do talent competitions as Stevie Wonder and bring the house down. I started doing it professionally and about three or four years ago someone said, ‘Why don’t you put them all together?’”

The show takes the audience through the history of the acts, starting with George Benson and ending with Barry White. Shenton then performs a soul medley paying tribute to late singers.

“It’s a great, fun night out for anybody who likes soul music,” he said.

“It’s light-hearted nostalgia, with the songs performed in their original version.”

Shenton, an original cast member from The Buddy Holly Story musical, believes he sounds most like Louis Armstrong, who he has been doing impressions of since he was a child.

But fans’ feedback differs.

“It depends on who their favourite is,” he said. “I sound like all of them!”

The show will begin at 8pm.
