Bhangra superstar Jazzy B took the stage by storm at the East London Mela in Barking Park on Sunday.

The annual celebration of Asian culture returned to the park in Longbridge Road with a mix of food, stalls, fairground rides and music to delight the thousands of revellers who turned up.

Hypnotize Crew, Juggy D, Raxtar and Kee were among other top names performing at the summer festival.

They were joined by Bollywood and belly dancers, musicians and DJs.

Television presenter Asad Shan, who presents Rock The Vibe on the Zing music channel, was interviewed on stage while foodies and families enjoyed curry and a myriad of stalls.

Asad, 29, said: “The Barking mela was great. It was good to interact with the crowd.

“It gave them an opportunity and I gave something back. It made their day. You could tell how excited they were.

“There were a few thousand people. Barking Park is a massive place.

‘Lots of families’

“What I really liked was that there were lots of families and lots of teenagers. It was nice. It gave them an opportunity to have an outing and enjoy the music and go on the rides.”

Chessmaster Norman Newman took part in an exhibition game and there was also a stone-lifting stunt.

Crowds cheered as Jazzy B – aka the Prince of Bhangra – performed a set and was also interviewed by Asian TV.

Other acts included UK Asian Music Awards winner Imran Khan, Sonia Walia, Shin Cobra and XLNC.

Khan, 28, released his debut album, Unforgettable, in 2009, and he won a UK Asian Music awards in the best desi act category the following year.
