TEENAGERS are renowned for their grumpy nature but one Upminster rock group is taking it to a whole new level by writing about it in their songs.

But the four piece group, called The FiftyFours have no reason to feel angry any more after making it in the finals of the Essex Undiscovered competition.

Lead vocalist, Matt Broadbent, said: “As teenagers we write about things that make us angry and things that just annoy us.”

Matt said: “It would be great to win it because it would really help to get the bands name out a little bit more and winning this competition would just speed up the process of getting people listening to our music.”

The group which consists of Matt, Jake Elliott on bass, Daniel Bhattacharya on guitar and Barney Nash are set to compete in the final stages of the competition at the Colchester Arts Centre, Colchester on November 20.

The four man rock group, who site influences like The Smiths and the Libertines entered the competition earlier this year making it through to the first stage, then just last month they were told that they had made it through to the final stages.

Matt said: “We are really proud to have made it this far in the competition and to win it would just be the icing on the cake.”

The band who pride themselves on writing their own music and not doing covers, formed in 2009 while studying at Coopers’ Company and Coborn School.

Matt and Daniel joined the group first followed by Jake and Barney making the line-up complete.

The group entered the competition last year but did not make it past the first round, but they believe that this time around they have a better chance of winning.

Matt said: “I did not think that we were as good last year but now I think that we are a lot tighter as a group and our music has more longevity.

“I think that we have something unique in comparison to the other groups because we perform our own stuff whereas a lot of other bands tend to do covers that are very cliche songs but we are quite energetic and our songs are catchy.”
