Upminster Hockey Club youngsters came out on top at the annual Essex Southern League finals day at Redbridge on Sunday.

The under-12 boys impressed once again, against rivals from Old Loughtonians, Brentwood, Old Southendians, Southend & Benfleet and Waltham Forest, to finish first overall and maintain their unbeaten record this season.

The under-12 girls saw their two teams finish second and third, while the under-10 boys were third and the girls were fourth.

A spokesperson said: “After a fine season for all of the Upminster teams this was a good test.

“Some great hockey was played and an exciting future lies ahead for Upminster. The highlight of the day had to be where the colts got to meet the Mayor of Waltham Forest or as Nancy Trew, one of the members of the under-10s team, called him ‘The King of Hockey!’.”
