Hornchurch golfer heads to world final
Playing in the biggest amateur golf tournament in the world would be a dream for most non-professional players.
For Hornchurch’s Dave Turff it’s a reality after winning the Audi Quattro UK final in Wiltshire with playing partner Sebastian Carmichael-Brown.
The pair head to Dubai for the world final in December (7-11) and Turff admits it has still not sunk in.
He said: “I couldn’t believe it, I still can’t. We were amazed just to win the regional final, now we get to go to Dubai.”
The two had not even played together prior to July’s regional finals and Turff added: “I’d never met him before, the top eight qualifiers are paired up and we just clicked. We’ve only played 3 rounds of golf together.”
They may just have been the three best rounds of golf either of them have ever played.
A field which started with 100,000 of the world’s best amateur golfers from over 50 countries around the globe has been whittled down to 60 teams set to take on the UAE course.
“Seb can’t believe it either, it will sink in once we get to the airport I think,” added Turff.
“It’s really nice (to represent GB), they’ve given us sweatshirts with the Union Jack on and we’re definitely going to wear them as we represent our country.”
Despite the enormity of the event neither intends to change their methods of preparation for the event, with Turff adding: “I’ve never really practiced for tournaments, so no reason to change as it seems to be working. We will just try not to think about it and enjoy ourselves.”
“We’ve already won, we want to just go out and enjoy it but you never know. We didn’t think we would get this far.”
