Shenfield skipper Jack Kliber wants his side to express themselves in their last fixture of the Essex League Premier Division season against in-form Ilford, writes Jacob Ranson.

Kliber and his young side travel to Valentines Park tomorrow (Saturday) and are set to face a big challenge.

“We’re not going to get relegated, we’re not going to win the league, so we can go out and play without any baggage and express ourselves,” said Kliber.

“It will be a big challenge for us, but like against anyone, if we play well we have a chance.”

The captain also talked up the form of this weekend’s opposition and even admitted he believes they have the best spin-bowling line-up in the division.

“Ilford have the best spin bowling line-up in the league, they have Essex opener Ashar Zaidi and Theeban (Tavarasa) who are the two best in the league,” he said.

“It will be a good challenge and opportunity for us to see how good our batting line-up is.”

Ilford have picked up two wins and one draw in their last three outings, beating champions-elect Wanstead, but Kliber just wants to focus on how his Shenfield side perform.

“They have been decent and have been getting good results the last few weeks,” he added.

“At this stage in the season we’re just trying to do our best every week and pick up points and then we can worry about looking at the table at the end of the year.”

Shenfield are expected to rotate their line-up and hand a few of their spots to youngsters.

“We’re probably a couple of players lighter than we want to be,” said Kliber. “We’re not at our strongest, but we will give some of our youngsters a chance and see how they rise to the challenge.

“Whatever the result they will be better off for it.”

Kliber also revealed Jack Plom is unlikely to be in the bowling attack due to a slight knock, adding: “He has a couple of England camps and is carrying a knock so it’s unlikely he will be bowling.”

He also admitted his side are still keen to grab fourth place in the final table as they can consider that as a successful season.

He added: “Hornchurch losing obviously helped as fourth is still up for grabs. To come fourth or fifth is what we were aiming for and is a solid season for such a young side like ours.”
