Former Shenfield High School pupil Mady Villiers shone with the ball as Surrey Stars won the Women’s Kia Super League at Hove on Monday.

Villiers only started playing cricket when she joined Shenfield High and went on to win several county titles, scoring her first century off 65 balls in a Schools’ Cup semi-final aged 14.

After going on to represent Essex in recent years, she was selected to play for Stars in this year’s competition, while also being picked for training and matches as part of a young England Academy group.

And after Surrey won their semi-final against Western Storm by nine runs, Villiers was given her chance to shine in the final against favourites Loughborough Lightning – and took it.

Surrey scored 183-6 from their 20 overs and had Lightning in trouble at 63-6 when Villiers was brought on to bowl the 11th over of the innings.

And she dismissed Lucy Higham with her first ball, before also picking up the scalps of Sarah Glenn and Kirstie Gordon to finish with 3-22 from her four overs as Stars won by 66 runs.

Interviewed by Sky Sports afterwards, Villiers thanked her family and mum Sharon for their support and is set to return to Shenfield high to share some of her experiences with pupils at the annual summer sports camp.

Head of PE Garry Sapsford said: “We’re incredibly proud of what Mady has achieved this season with Surrey Stars.

“She is a hugely talented and committed young cricketer and we are sure she has the potential to go all the way and represent England at senior level at some point in the future.

“She is a fantastic role model for our students and we are all so excited about her coming back this week to tell us about her season.”
