Romford potter ready for UK Championships
Romford snooker star Matthew Selt admits the words of former world champion Stephen Hendry will be ringing in his ears when he gets his UK Championship bid underway next week.
Selt enjoyed the best season of his career in 2014/2015, making his first appearance in the final of a professional tournament at the Lisbon Open European Tour and climbing into the world’s top 32 for the first time.
That upturn in fortunes coincided with the 30-year-old linking up with good friend Hendry who offered him advice on how to improve his game.
Selt continued his impressive form in the early stages of this season, but performances have turned somewhat stale since his defeat to Judd Trump at the Shanghai Masters in September.
Nonetheless, Selt, who now lives in Atherstone, is confident he can get things back on track.
“Last season was the best season I have ever had,” he said. “I started off well this season and it would have been nice to go one further and win one.
“But we’re only halfway through the season and there are plenty of tournaments to come.
“There’s no coincidence that my game got a lot stronger since I started doing a bit of work with Stephen Hendry.
“He gave me a bit of advice and I took it into my game and my results started to get a lot stronger.
“I’ve always been good friends with him for about five or six years now, and I went to him when he retired and asked him to give me any pointers.
“He took a look at what I was doing and gave me some different routines to work on.
“I believe every player is pretty much the same, it’s all about work ethic and consistency.
“He gave me some routines to work on my consistency and my results started to get so much better. He’s been a great asset really.”
The next tournament on Selt’s calendar is the UK Championships, kicking off at the York Barbican on November 24.
He reached the fourth round of the tournament last year, only to lose 6-0 to eventual champion Ronnie O’Sullivan.
And Selt admits that he is hoping to progress further this time round, especially after O’Sullivan’s announcement that he will not be defending his title.
“It was lovely to play Ronnie last year, but obviously the result wasn’t great for me,” he added.
“I’d never been in that position before, and to be honest, I froze. It will be nice to go back and hopefully get a lot further.
“Last year, he was one of the only people who could have stopped me and do me some real damage, and obviously he did.
“He’s not there this year, so it is a great opportunity for everyone.”
