Swimmers shine at national finals

Coopers pupils gave a good account of themselves at the National School Swimming Team Championships in Coventry at the weekend.

One of only two state schools to reach the prestigious event, they saw their junior girls squad of Hannah Binning, Ruby Wilson, Lois Wyatt, Anna Manning and Victoria Bishop finish 10th overall in the freestyle relay and 12th in the medley.

Jonathan Cox, Harry Fox, Ben Davis and Oscar Martin combined as the junior boys finished 15th in their freestyle race and 14th in the medley event, after being promoted from reserve when another school withdrew.

Head of student enrichment Mark Duncan said: “Getting through to this stage was a great achievement. Both teams put in an exceptional amount of effort and managed some excellent results.

“The results are a testament to the hard work and dedication all these students put into their sport.

“It takes a lot to get up at 5am and go swimming and then come to school for a full day of lessons.

“It seems Duncan Goodhew’s inspirational visit and the swimming tour to Malta also helped them all raise their game.

“I know they will all be training hard to improve their placings next year, as well as at the upcoming Biathlon regional finals we have qualified for in January at Crystal Palace.”
