Hockey squad impress on national stage
Coopers Coborn’s girls hockey squad secured a fine sixth place finish at the National Outdoor finals at Cannock.
Although edged out by Kingston and Millfield on the first day, which saw two of their squad sent to hospital with injuries, the Upminster pupils produced a superb performance to beat Bromsgrove 3-2.
Head of department Helen Biscoe said: “It was a phenomenal effort against prestigious hockey schools. The girls played with unbelievable passion.
“We were the only state school team to reach this stage yet again and finished a fine sixth in the country. The girls played exceptionally well throughout and did the school incredibly proud.”
The under-18 boys tennis squad have reached their National finals for the second year in a row after beating KEGS in their play-off.
Harry Cannons and Leon Philbert earned narrow singles wins, before teaming up to win their doubles match to level the overall score at 3-3.
Cannons and Alec Roeper then stepped up for the tie-break, winning 10-7, to book a trip to Bolton.
Gopal Sagoo completed the Coopers line-up and teacher Mark Duncan said: “The play-off was incredibly close and nerve-racking. It was an amazing win and certainly meant a lot to the team, especially as for three of them it is their last year in the competition.”
Coopers enjoyed more success at the Essex Schools Cross-Country Championships at Hylands Park, where the year eight girls came out on top and the year seven boys took second.
The year eight boys were fourth, while the year seven girls were seventh, and 10 Coopers pupils will now represent Essex at the Inter Counties event on March 29.
They are year seven pupils Dan Hawkes, Harry Jones, Oliver Woods, Josh Adolphe, plus year eights Katie Mitchell, Rebecca Brown, Sophie Rand, Annalie Tanner, Bethan Isherwood and Tom Keevil.
The year 10 girls netball team won the Havering tournament for the fourth year in a row, meanwhile, and the year seven boys badminton squad of Thushar Jitesh, Neo Wren, Sam King, Dan Hawkes and Jamie Bixby were crowned borough champions after beating Hall Mead (4-1), Abbs Cross (5-0) and Hall Mead B (5-0).
Coopers won both the boys and girls competitions at the Lee Valley Indoor Cup to reach the semi-finals at the end of the month.
Flynn Astbury, Haroon Bouazza, Mayowa Osunsami, Adam Watson, Max Staines and Oliver Morter all celebrated wins for the boys, while Grace Okunola, Isabelle McDonach, Riva Siggins, Emily Marshall, Bukola Abass, Abi Shipton and Lizzie Adams were victorious for the girls.
