Chess team win regional heat of National Championships

Brentwood Prep’s Under-11 chess team were celebrating this week after taking gold in the regional heat of the National Primary Schools’ Team Championship.

The six-player team took top honours in the zonal round of the competition which was held in Colchester and will now go on to compete in the semi-finals at Camber Sands, Sussex in June – the third year running the School has progressed to this stage.

The three-round championship, which is now in its 45th year, is an annual event organised by the English Primary Schools’ Chess Association and is open to any school in England, Scotland, Wales or Gibraltar, with pupils aged from five to 11 years.

The winning Brentwood Prep team – made up of five players and a playing reserve - played five rounds of chess during the day and all players competed in each round.

There were a total of 12 teams in the Under-11 section and Brentwood scored 20 points from a possible 25, finishing a creditable 3½ points ahead of their nearest rival, R A Butler School from Saffron Walden.

After the semi-finals, the best teams in the country will meet in the two-day final in July.

Brentwood’s victorious team included Nihaal Sandhu, Alexander Chaban, Bemi Thompson, Alex Watkins, Abhay Uppal and Austin Cooper.
