Giles: It’s great to be back

Ryan Giles is relishing his return to a Romford Raiders jersey.

Defenceman Giles, 21, has rejoined the club from home-town outfit Invicta.

And he is looking to get his career back on track after recovering from a badly broken leg.

He said: “I played a couple of years as a junior and there’s a good core of players I used to play with.

“It’ll be good to play with the boys again.

“It was a good experience while I was there.

“I played with and against some awesome players. It seemed like we were always playing against Milton Keynes and Guildford, who had such a roster you can only learn from those games.”

Giles left the club halfway through that 2009/10 EPL campaign, due to increasing financial costs, but worse was to follow as he broke his femur in a bad car crash.

He said: “I was in hospital for two weeks and couldn’t walk for three months. It was hard, but I got through it.”

After having pieces of metal removed from the leg, Giles built up his strength while skating at Romford and Invicta last summer.

Then he got an unexpected call to dress for the Dynamos once more.

“I didn’t intend to play at all last season, but one thing led to another,” he said.

“I couldn’t move my leg fully. I played, but probably only 60 per cent of my capabilities.”

Several months on, Giles is hoping to be closer to full strength when the puck drops again this autumn.

And he is looking forward to the challenge with Danny Marshall’s men.

He added: “Danny’s said he wants me to come in and play on defence.

“I want a good year. People don’t really realize what I’ve been through. It puts things into perspective.

“I want to enjoy my hockey again and Romford has got a great dressing room with a great bunch of guys.”
