Daily Mail Under-18 Cup: Brentwood 10 Campion 15
Campion booked a trip to Kent school Skinners in the Daily Mail Under-18 Cup yesterday.
But the Hornchurch pupils were made to work very hard for their win by hosts Brentwood.
Campion, having eased to a 47-0 victory over Robert Clack in the previous round, led 10-3 at half-time after a try from Oliver Lee, which was converted by Matt Birtles.
The two sides traded penalties as well before the break and Lee’s second score opened up a 12-point gap in the second half.
Brentwood replied with a converted try of their own to set up a tense finale, but Campion held on.
Teacher Mike McDarby said: “It was a battle.
“Brentwood have got some good players and we expected a tough game, but we were not overly happy with our performance.
“We were a bit flat, but credit to Brentwood, they played very well.
“We had a lot of territory and possession and should’ve taken points when they were on offer.
“Brentwood had some good individuals who caused us a few problems and the game swung both ways.”
Lee and captain George Osbourne were praised for their individual performances, but McDarby knows his side must do better in the next round.
He added: “Skinners reached the quarter finals last year and were very strong. We’re expecting another tough one.”
