Upminster Rugby Club will be hosting the second Jim Ball Memorial match at their Hall Lane ground on Saturday, March 31.

A Jim Ball XV of past and present players will be captained by Matthew Ball and take on a Barbarians XV led by Ant Brentnall, with players from Romford & Gidea Park, Campion and City League teams.

And there will also be food and drink available from the bar, a raffle and auction, as well as live music.

Club social secretary Harry Lockwood said: “The Jim Ball memorial match is actually the second one to be hosted, the first being back on the 22nd January 2012.

“Jim was a loving, kind and funny man who was adored by all and died from a heart attack back in August 2011.

“His son Matthew is running the marathon next month for the British Heart Foundation and in memory of his father, so this seemed the perfect time to run a second memorial match to help Matt hit his target.

“The British Heart Foundation is a brilliant charity that everyone can relate to as heart disease is the biggest killer in the UK, we as organisers can only hope we have done the charity and Jim proud.”

The match on March 31 starts at 1.30pm and this weekend sees the first team travel to Canvey Island for their latest London Three Essex fixture.

Upminster will make the trip up the A13 on the back of a 26-18 win at snowy Clacton last weekend, with their sixth success of the season seeing them leapfrog their hosts into seventh place.
