Youngsters enjoy successful time on the local scene

Romford & Gidea Park under-11s walked away from the Thurrock Festival with runners-up medals after a superb display of rugby on Sunday.

The youngsters began the day in the pool stages, where they were due to meet Old Brentwood’s, Epping Upper Clapton and Woodford.

In their first match, a brace from Kyian Jeffrey, as well as tries from Shayden Smith and Zack McClenaghan, saw Park to a 4-2 success against Old Brentwood’s.

McClenghan was at the double in the next match against Epping, scoring twice with Ben Okonkwo and Warren Petrie also crossing in a 4-0 win.

The final pool match saw Romford face Woodford, with McClenaghan’s fourth try coming in a 1-1 draw that saw the youngsters through to the final.

There, Park came up against Wanstead, but having been hit by a string on injuries, lost 3-0 to finish the tournament as runners-up.

“Another great morning of rugby and another great achievement for the boys,” said a club spokesperson.
