Romford & Gidea Park celebrate winning the Ashford Vets tournament

New league season gets underway

London Division 2NE

Woodford v Romford & GP

A new rugby season kicks-off this weekend, but Romford & Gidea Park have an injury crisis as they head to Highams to take on newly-relegated Woodford.

Park showed plenty of consistency under coach Mark Collins last season, but they had to settle for a third-place finish as Rochford and Braintree earned promotion.

Several new faces have joined the squad and Collins is keen to keep giving younger players their chance.

With several senior members on the treatment table this week, he might not have any other choice tomorrow.

London Division 3NE

Campion v South Woodham Ferrers

Steve Canny has taken over from Luke Maguire as captain of Campion, who managed to avoid relegation in a tense finish last season.

Canny misses the start of the new campaign with a hamstring injury, but welcomes James Jenkins and Dan McEvoy back from their travels.

And he is hoping the club can move forward this winter, with a bigger squad to work under coach Bob Mansell.

Norwich v Upminster

Upminster make the long trip to Norwich for their opener, after a decent enough 2010/11 campaign.

The club’s main focus this season, however, is on developing the links between their senior and junior sides.

Chairman Ross Morrell says Upminster want to build a ‘One Club’ mentality moving forwards over the next five years.

A bus ride to Norfolk is certainly one way to build team spirit.
