Saracens winger in line to represent hosts in Manchester next month

George Perkins could taste international glory this summer after being named in the England squad for next month’s World Rugby Under-20 Championship in Manchester.

The Saracens winger, who was previously a student at Coopers Coborn School in Brentwood, is part of a 28-man squad that will try to emulate the Young Roses class of 2014, who lifted the cup in New Zealand.

It will also be a second World Championship for Perkins after being a part of the squad which finished as runners-up in Italy last year, losing to the Baby Blacks in the final.

But new head coach Martin Haag is confident Perkins and his new team mates can go one better on home turf this time around.

“This group will only play together for this tournament. It will be a proud moment when they pull on the white jersey and run out in front of family and friends in a home World Cup,” said Haag.

Perkins will meet up with the national squad for a pre-tournament training camp in Newcastle later this month, which Haag believes will be crucial to any hopes of success England have.

“It’s about driving our own standards and our own identity and in that camp we need to set the tone for how we want to play,” he said.

“When we go on that training park we will be short and sharp and play with high intensity. We need to get the learning and education in so that we’re in good shape and also have the right environment heading into the tournament.”
