Under-13s win final to complete double

Brentwood Eels signed the 2015 season off in style as the under-13s won their Grand Final at Rutlish Raiders at Medway Park to add to their cup win from earlier in the year.

The under-14s were runners-up in their series and the under-15 made the play-offs, while the under-12s put in a great show in their first tournament.

The adult side lead Division One with one week left, after beating Southend convincingly, and the club are set to welcome Wigan Warriors to Brentwood next month, for a two-day skills workshop with their players.

Speaking of the Grand Final success, club chairman Carl Horsman said: “It’s a fantastic result and something which everybody associated with the club can be proud of.

“These are really exciting times for the club with plans already underway for the 2016 season which should be an even bigger year for us.

“Congratulations to all of our sides who have performed exceptionally well this season.”

Brentwood produced some committed defence to repel early Rutlish atacks, but fell behind before Wiseman, Ducker and Smith combined to send Rory Gray over to level.

The Raiders pack was the most powerful the Eels had faced all season and set up another try out wide, which was converted.

But captain Gray rallied his troops and big carries from Burke and Ruffle allowed Holding to sent Watts over for a try that Holding converted.

Rutlish were forced to hand over possession after the next set of tackles, as McDonnell and Albert produced some big hits, and quick hands released Davis, who beat his man and released Burke for the third try, which Holding again converted.

Woods saw a score ruled out for double movement, before Rutlish hit back with a converted try after a series of penalties to edge back in front.

But Brentwood’s Brand and Powell built momentum off the bench, with Raffle releasing Hodgkins-Brown only to be tackled just short.

The breakthrough came when Wiseman and Schmiedefeldt set up a play for Strange to loop around and put Eels ahead with 10 minutes left.

And the Brentwood youngsters clinched a 26-18 victory when Smith, Holding and Watts linked up to send Davis crashing over the line late on.

n Brentwood’s under-14s ended their campaign with a 28-18 win over Invicta Panthers in a physical contest.

The two sides combined in a great spectacle for a vocal crowd, with Invicta strong in the middle of the park and Eels showing good pace and handling.

Burns, McClellan and Douglas went over for Brentwood as the first half ended level at 12-12, with the home side exerting more control after the restart.

Good forward drives allowed the backs to execute attacking plays, with tries from Keable, Valentini and Burns, plus a pair of conversions from Rian Horsman, completing the Eels tally.
