Romford Golf Club were celebrating this week after securing a return to the Thornton Cup final for the first time in a decade.

The Heath Drive club suffered a close defeat against Chelmsford at Canons Brook in 2004, but will chase the silverware again after beating West Essex in their semi-final at Bentley.

Romford led 3-1 in the morning foursomes, with the final match still out on the course.

Stalwarts Steve Hazell and Nigel Stokes were all square playing the last, but Stokes produced a 270-yard drive to leave his partner a five wood approach, which he put to 10 feet to ensure victory and a 4-1 lead at lunch.

Romford did not start the afternoon singles too well, though, and lost four of the first six matches as West Essex rallied.

But Sam Wilding steadied the ship against former West Ham midfielder John Moncur, producing a fantastic shot at the last to set up a 12-foot putt and a one-hole victory.

And further wins for Stokes, Lee Bowyer and Brett Bishop ensured a 9-6 victory and a rematch with Chelmsford at Wanstead on Sunday September 21.

Captain Andy Arthur said: “I am proud of all the squad. It was a great team effort to make the final.

“We had a couple of team players away on holiday so we will be stronger for the final. It is 45 years since this great club held the premier county trophy and we will give it our best shot and prepare thoroughly over the next four weeks.”

n Romford Golf Club held their Junior Club Championship last week.

In perfect conditions Jack Bearman secured the Bonaker Shield silverware with a gross round of 76, with Kayssi Hurley finishing as runner-up.

The Cadet Cup was played on the same day for the handicap prize and won by Josh Halliday with a net 63, with George Oakes second after a 65.
