Defeat on island harsh on Marshall’s men

Romford Raiders saw their ENL Division One title hopes hit by a 2-1 defeat at leaders Isle of Wight at the weekend.

Player-coach Danny Marshall gave his side the lead with one second left in the first period.

But Steve Gosset levelled for the hosts in the 33rd minute to set up a tense final period.

Romford’s Juraj Huska hit the crossbar before Billy Phillips was given a match penalty for high sticks with seven minutes left.

And Wight made the extra man count with Jason Gorrie netting the winner on the powerplay.

Phillips sat out Romford’s 6-2 win over lowly Bristol the following night, as Huska netted twice and was joined on the scoresheet by Marshall, AJ Smith, JJ McGrath and Jason Buckman.

Raiders moved above Chelmsford into third place and visit Streatham on Saturday, before hosting the Isle of Wight on Sunday.
