Romford youngster in GB squad
Romford’s JJ Pitchley received praise from Raiders management following his Great Britain under-20s call-up this week.
Former St Edwards pupil Pitchley was named in a 22-strong squad for the Alexei Cherepanov tournament in Lithuania later this month, where GB will face their Lithuanian and Polish counterparts, as well as Belarus under-18s and Russian club sides Omsk Hawks and Kapitan Stupino.
And Raiders team boss Mick Cahill was delighted at the news, saying: “We’re very happy, and a little bit proud actually, that JJ has been selected to play for GB U20s.
“It’s a really prestigious tournament with Britain playing against Lithuania, Poland, Belarus and two teams from Russia. I’m sure JJ will both enjoy and benefit from the experience and I am a particular fan of the U20 coaching set-up with Pete Russell being joined by Tom Watkins and Paul Heavey.
“JJ will miss some Raiders’ practice sessions but I guess if most people were offered the choice of wearing a GB jersey in Lithuania or a training shirt in the Lea Bridge Road, they’d probably plump for the former!
“We all congratulate JJ on his achievement and wish him well.”
