Marshall wants to avoid suspensions
Raiders player-coach Danny Marshall wants his players to keep their cool against Streatham tomorrow (Saturday, 5.30pm), ahead of their play-off meetings next month.
Tempers boiled over when the sides met in south London two weeks ago, as Raiders held on for a 5-4 win, and Marshall – who was forced to watch from the bench – says his side cannot afford to let their emotions get the better of them in the return meeting at Lee Valley, with champions Chelmsford also due to visit on Sunday (7.30pm).
He said: “They know we’ve got a short bench and we’ve got them coming in the play-offs, so any injuries or bans will work in their favour.
“We’ve got to watch their tactics and just knuckle down. Our other games shouldn’t cause us any trouble as they’re against hockey-playing teams.
“We need to be smart as some of the boys are close to the mark with penalty points.
“I’ll have a word with my players, but they play with a lot of passion and things happen in the heat of the moment.”
JJ McGrath completes a two-match ban tomorrow, while Frankie Harvey is also unavailable, but both should return against the Chieftains, who clinched the title last weekend.
Marshall added: “It’s been very frustrating this season as I’m used to us being up there competing for silverware.
“We knew it would be difficult but we’ve worked hard and we haven’t done too bad.
“We knew coming to a new set-up at Lee Valley was going to be hard all round, but it’s starting to come together now and we’ve got to make the best of what we’ve got.”
Club management revealed their intention to compete in the National League again in 2014/15 late last week and Marshall welcomed the early announcement, adding: “It’s good news. It has given us a chance to think about who is coming back and who isn’t.
“We can start building earlier this time as it was late last year and we lost a few key players.”
