Wight skate off with ‘cup’

Romford Raiders were held to a 1-1 draw by the Isle of Wight in the second leg of their Challenge Cup last night.

A week on from their 7-2 win over the ENL leaders, Romford took a second-minute lead through player-coach Danny Marshall.

But Canadian Jason Gorrie levelled soon after and the scoreline remained unchanged for the next 55 minutes, as Wight clinched a 6-3 aggregate success.

Romford had briefly occupied second place in the league table after an 8-2 win at lowly Bristol on Saturday.

Travelling west with only 10 skaters, with defencemen Tyrone Miller (injury) and Billy Phillips (suspension) among others unavailable, Raiders fell behind to the Pitbulls, before Marshall levelled.

Marshall put his side ahead in the second period, but Bristol hit back before Anthony Leone made it 3-2.

A third goal from Marshall, just before the interval, gave Romford some breathing space and Slovakian import Juraj Huska added a final period hat-trick to help clinch the points as rivals Invicta fell to a shock 6-3 defeat at Bracknell.

Dynamos bounced back to beat Oxford last night, while Chelmsford skated to victory at MK Thunder to send Romford back to fourth place as the race for play-off positions hots up.
