Management make early announcement for next season
London Raiders’ management and coaching staff met this week and are pleased to announce the club’s intention to participate in the National League Division One South again next season.
Forced to relocated from their original home in Romford to the Lee Valley Ice Arena, and play more home fixtures on Saturdays, Raiders have seen crowd numbers hit.
But player-coach Danny Marshall and his threadbare squad remain on course for a top-four finish and team manager Mick Cahill said: “It’s no secret this has been a terrible year financially but the drastic steps we took to survive appear to have worked, just.
“We know there are things we could have done better as a management team and recognising our shortcomings is the first step on the road to fixing them.
“We’ve learned a lot in our first season at Lee Valley and we’re using that experience in making preparations for next year.
“We’ve set up a dedicated team comprising people from inside the club and external specialists to look at the whole subject of sponsorship, marketing and promotions and while it’s very early days yet, we’re pleased with our progress.
“Making a relatively early announcement about next season is just better for everyone; players, sponsors and supporters alike.
“We know where we stand and that hasn’t always been possible with Raiders teams in the past, not least this season.
“Danny (Marshall) knows the budget and it will be up to him to build his roster but, although there’s a long way between March and September, we’re not expecting wholesale changes.
“One thing that definitely is in the plan is some extra bodies, although I have to say that the short bench we’ve operated with since January has performed heroics.
“If we can stay healthy and away from penalty trouble, I honestly believe we can be a match for anyone in the play-offs.”
Raiders are set to host Bracknell on Saturday (5.30pm), having held on for a hard-fought win at Streatham last weekend.
Their home match with Streatham, postponed last month due to ice problems, will take place on March 22.
