New season gets underway this weekend
Romford Raiders captain Anthony Leone is relishing the start of the new ice hockey season this weekend.
Leone leads the side into English National League action at MK Thunder tonight (Saturday, 7pm), before the Isle of Wight Raiders visit Rom Valley Way for a South East Trophy clash tomorrow (Sunday, 5.15pm).
And Leone says the mood in the Romford camp is one of excitement.
“We’ve been on the ice for about five weeks now and had a really good session this week.
“It was more serious and we’re all looking forward to the weekend.
“We’re looking good and strong and I think we’ll definitely do something this season.”
Raiders finished just three points behind champions Isle of Wight last term, before their injury-hit side bowed out of the play-off semi-finals against Chelmsford.
But Leone believes they can achieve success this time around.
“A few silly games, against Bracknell and Streatham really, cost us last season, or we would’ve won the league,” he said.
“But Danny (Marshall) has worked hard at keeping most of the squad together and getting a few new players in and we’ve got a really good defence and a bit more firepower.
“Milton Keynes is a hard place to play, but they’re not one of the top teams, so hopefully we can get off to a good start and get some confidence.”
