Cahill welcomes trio back
Romford Raiders team manager Mick Cahill is delighted to have Matt Turner, AJ Smith and Andrius Kaminskas back for the 2012/13 season.
The trio were key performers as Danny Marshall’s men landed an English National League and South East Trophy double last term.
And Cahill was overjoyed to see them agree terms to return for another campaign.
He said: “I’ll be honest, if I was building a team Matt would be the first name on my list.
“Some of the goals he scored last season just left you shaking your head in admiration and his skill level is up there with the best of them.
“I know his signature was hotly contested and I’m personally delighted that he’s agreed terms for another season at Romford.”
Turner won the Players Player of the Year award, as well as the Best Forward prize, and combined well with Smith on the second line.
Both players tallied a total of 88 points in all games and of Smith, Cahill added: “AJ is a tremendous asset and, apart from having fantastic hands, he plays really smart hockey, consistently.
“I know he enjoyed his line partnership with Matt Turner and if Marsh keeps them together I can only see that relationship improving and being more productive than ever. It’s great to have AJ back.”
Lithuanian import Kaminskas averaged a point per game on defence, but also attracted criticism from some quarters after collecting 210 minutes in penalties.
Cahill said: We knew what we were getting when Bomber decided to strap the skates on again and he certainly didn’t disappoint us.
“I guess we would all prefer for him to be a less frequent visitor to the penalty box, but he more than makes up for it with his commitment and ability.
“He’s arguably the best rushing defenceman in the division, but he can just as easily perform as an out-and-out forward.
“That sort of versatility is invaluable and is exactly what you need from one of your imports.”
