New import signing Jakub Kostelansky made an immediate impact to help London Raiders to a morale-boosting win over the high-flying Redskins.

Slovakian forward Kostelansky, 21, struck just 34 seconds into his debut to put the hosts ahead at a busy Lee Valley and rounded off a good night’s work with the last goal of the match just 12 seconds into the final period.

Kostelansky’s early opener was quickly cancelled out by former Raider Jakub Klima, who then sent Steven Fisher away to put the visitors in front in the seventh minute.

But Streatham’s joy was shortlived as Alan Lack levelled just 35 seconds later on his home Raiders debut and Jacob Ranson put the hosts 3-2 up, assisted by Kostelansky with barely nine minutes on the clock.

Sean Scarborough squared matters once again at 11:37, firing through the pads of James Tanner, but a late tripping penalty against team-mate Jack Tarczycki gave Raiders a powerplay chance before the interval.

And they made it count as Ranson struck for the second time on the night with an unassisted effort to send the Raiders faithful wild.

Lack was called for a trip on Klima, with only seven seconds remaining in the opening session, but Raiders survived the shorthanded spell and went close to a fifth when the hard-shooting Kostelansky rattled the goal frame.

The home side – who were without captain Tom Davis and Ross Wilkinson due to suspensions picked up in last weekend’s loss at Oxford – could not capitalise on an interference minor against Casimir Madren-Britton, but extended their lead soon after the penalty had expired as Lack and Stephen Deacon combined to set up Grant Taylor for a fine goal.

And after Redskins were given a bench minor for having too many men on the ice later in the middle stanza, Kostelansky made it 6-3 on the powerplay just 12 seconds after the restart.

Raiders had thrown away a three-goal lead at Bracknell a week earlier, when they were forced to settle for a point in a 3-3 draw.

But there were to be no slip-ups this time and Streatham’s Joe Allen was given a 2+10 penalty for checking to the head, six minutes from time, which helped Raiders control the clock and preserve their lead with few alarms.

Tanner took the man of the match award, after the shot count finished 35-32 in favour of the home side, and Liam Chong was named player of the month for December as Raiders gave their play-off hopes a huge boost.

The two sides meet again in south London tomorrow (Sunday, 6.45pm) and will face off for a third time in a week back at Lee Valley next Saturday.
