Down the years, there have been plenty of famous comebacks in the world of sport.

Some of the more recent ones include New England Patriots recovering from a 25-point deficit to win Super LI and Liverpool’s Champions League triumph in 2005, but there have been plenty through history to keep us all entertained.

Sir Alex Ferguson was part of a historic fightback in 1999, when his Manchester United side scored twice in stoppage time to beat Bayern Munich in the Champions League final.

Though unlikely to be as fondly remembered, Ferguson was present to witness another fine sporting comeback on Thursday night at The O2 as Boston Celtics roared back to beat Philadelphia 76ers in this year’s NBA London Game.

Midway through the second period, Celtics trailed by as many as 22 points, yet finished the match as 114-103 victors.

Cheered on by shouts of “MVP” from the crowd, Boston point guard Kyrie Irving was one of the stars of the show.

The 25-year-old, an off-season signing from Cleveland Cavaliers, notched 20 points for Celtics in the win.

While much has been said of 76ers’ young side, with hopes they can be a real force in the NBA in the coming years, it was one of their more experienced players who shone in London.

Shooting guard J.J. Redick, 33, finished the game as Philadelphia’s top scorer after nabbing 22 points.

The performances from Irving and Redick will have no doubt impressed a crowd that contained plenty of famous faces.

The likes of Arsenal right back Hector Bellerin, West Ham United’s Adrian, Manuel Lanzini and Pedro Obiang, as well as the Tottenham Hotspur quartet of Eric Dier, Jan Vertonghen, Mousa Dembele and Toby Alderweireld, were all at The O2.

They were joined by some of the biggest names from the world of showbusiness, including comedian Jack Whitehall, Little Mix’s Jesy Nelson and Leigh-Anne Pinnock and rap parody artist Big Shaq.

This year’s match between Celtics and 76ers was the eighth regular season match to be played in the capital.

And with entertainment like was witnessed on Thursday night, there are sure to be many more years of NBA action in London to follow.
