‘One weekend at a time’ says player-coach
Raiders player-coach Danny Marshall is looking forward to a one-game weekend at Milton Keynes tomorrow (Saturday).
Marshall has been forced to cut his squad to two bare lines this month, due to financial constraints, but saw them enjoy a four-point haul last weekend.
The club’s all-time leading points scorer was on target in a home win over the Thunder at Lee Valley, before Raiders skated to a fine success in Bracknell the following night.
And Marshall said: “Things are not perfect at the moment and having to release five guys was not easy.
“For a while it wasn’t just about winning games, but making it to the end of the season and rebuilding from there.
“People like me, who are a bit older, don’t really want to be playing two-line hockey!
“But the boys have pulled together and we’ve still got enough talent to take points.”
Frankie Harvey, Jakub Klima and Grant Taylor all netted twice against the league’s basement boys, as 16-year-old defenceman Charlie Phillips claimed his first senior goal for the club.
And Klima had a hand in all five Raiders goals against the Hornets a day later, as Michael Gray made 43 saves in a man of the match display.
Marshall added: “We’ve gone to Bracknell with a full squad in the past and never found it easy.
“Michael has come in after having some time off and is playing well. Sometimes, when you’ve got less guys, they get more ice time and can get into games more. Every game we play we’ve got to turn up now.”
Raiders face a quick return meeting with Milton Keynes this weekend, on their tiny, temporary rink.
And Marshall, who revealed he was talking to a couple of players about joining the squad, is hoping that will suit his threadbare line-up, adding: “We’ve got to take it one weekend at a time and hope we don’t pick up any injuries.
“Milton Keynes is a small rink and I think they could be a tricky side in a rink like that and nick points off teams.
“I’m hoping it suits us. We’ve been there already and know what to expect.”
