London Raiders suffered their second successive National League home defeat at Lee Valley after a tense encounter with Streatham.

Having seen their unbeaten home record brought to an end by Invicta a week earlier, when they let a two-goal lead slip to lose 4-2, Raiders were always chasing the game against their rivals from south London.

They took to the ice without forward James Pentecost, who had been released due to work commitments, and were also missing defencemen Julian Smith and Mark Robinson as a tight opening period remained goalless until three minutes before the buzzer, when Steven Fisher put the visitors in front.

Import forward Sean Scarborough doubled Streatham’s lead shortly before the end of the period, but Raiders hit back after the restart through JJ Pitchley.

George Norcliffe made it 3-1 midway through the match, though, after great set-up play from Alex Sampford and tempers then boiled over late in the middle session after Pitchley went in late on Streatham goalie Matt Colclough.

Gloves came off across the ice as a result, with Pitchley, Jack Cooper and Slavomir Buda all receiving double minors for roughing, along with Streatham’s Casimir Madren-Britton, Ryan Giles and Jack Tarczycki.

Madren-Britton was given an extra minor penalty, though, and Fisher was ejected on a match penalty, giving Raiders an extended spell of 5-on-3 either side of the second break.

They fell further behind early in the final period, though, as Ryan Webb skated clear to net a shorthanded goal for Streatham, which proved to be the game winner.

Jacob Ranson pulled one back for Raiders, with captain Tom Davis also finding the net soon after to raise the home side’s hopes of salvaging something from the game.

But the visitors protected their slender lead to skate off with the points and Raiders will hope to redress the balance when the sides meet again in a return fixture in Streatham tomorrow night (Sunday, 6.45pm).
