Big Cats face Derby date

The Levett Essex Leopards will aim to end Derby’s unbeaten start to the National League Division One season in the Midlands tomorrow (Saturday).

And Steve Ogunjimi’s men are out for revenge after the Trailblazers knocked them out of the National Cup with a 79-69 win at the Brentwood Centre last weekend.

Derby have won their first four league matches, while Leopards have a 2-2 record in mid-table.

The Big Cats produced a dominant second-half display to beat Bradford Dragons 80-61 on Saturday, with six of their players in double figures.

Ladi Brown, Will Ashby and Tom Martin all tallied 12 points, while Courtney van Beest had 11 and Albert Margai and Justin Hitchman 10 apiece.

Leopards led 18-17 at the first break and had moved 42-35 up by half time and Dougie Bennett sank a pair of free throws to leave them 56-49 ahead after the third quarter.

Captain Margai hit six points in an 8-0 run as the visitors widened the gap in the final quarter.

But Leopards struggled with their shooting the next day as Derby booked a place in the cup semi-finals.

The Big Cats converted only a third of their field goal attempts and just 23 per cent of their three-point efforts, with Brown (right, 17), Margai (15), van Beest (10) and Hitchman (10) their top scorers. Leopards host Leicester at Brentwood on November 29 (4pm).
