Romford Raiders 6 Bracknell Hornets 4

Captain Anthony Leone’s hat-trick led a below-par Romford Raiders past a spirited Bracknell side last night.

The home side did just enough to hold the Hornets at bay and extend their unbeaten record to eight games, as Leone linked up well with linemates AJ Smith and Jason Buckman.

Barely a minute had been played when Leone reacted quickest, after Julian Smith’s shot was blocked, to put Romford ahead.

But a tripping call against Billy Phillips gave Tony Barclay the chance to level on the powerplay in the 10th minute.

Raiders regained the lead just 29 seconds later as Frankie Harvey collected the puck on the end boards and skated to the front of the net to beat David Wride with a backhand shot.

But Bracknell got back on terms for a second time when Tom Fisher netted, after the puck bounced kindly off Romford defenceman David Oliver.

Again, parity did not last long as Juraj Huska collected the puck behind Wride’s net, skated out in front and lifted a backhand shot into the roof of the net.

And, with only 18 seconds left in the period, Leone swapped passes with AJ Smith before chipping in his second goal of the game.

The second period was less than two minutes old when Danny Hughes sent a slapshot whistling past Michael Gray from the left wing.

And, after Phillips was called for interference, Tom Smith tapped home from close range when Ben Duggan’s shot was saved to make it 4-4.

Duggan dropped the gloves with AJ Smith for a mid-ice scrap soon after, with the Romford man landing the majority of the punches before being wrestled to the ice.

And Raiders regained the lead on a delayed penalty call as man of the match Leone kept his cool to complete his hat-trick.

There were still chances at both ends of the rink, but Raiders made sure of the points when Buckman’s effort from a tight angle hit the post and rebounded into the net off Alan Lack’s skate.

Scorers, Romford: Leone 3+1 Buckman 1+2 Harvey 1+1 Huska 1+1 A Smith 0+4 Marshall 0+2 J Smith 0+1.

Bracknell: T Smith 1+1 Barclay 1 Fisher 1 Hughes 1 Duggan 0+2 Avery 0+1 Pitchley 0+1 Carroll 0+1 Reynolds 0+1.
