After winning at home to Southend-on-Sea last time out, the leaders will aim to now triumph at the Old County Ground

Billy Gordon is looking forward to Saturday’s Essex League Premier Division clash between his Hornchurch team and old rivals Brentwood.

The two clubs are involved in the title race with the Harrow Lodge Park outfit top of the table with 195 points from 12 fixtures and Aaron West’s men 25 off that total in third spot.

Hornchurch have hit form at just the right time and won their last nine games in a row in all competitions – including seeing off their local rivals on the way to winning the Essex T20 Cup last month.

And Gordon wants another triumph on Saturday, saying: “Brentwood is a massive game. They’re a fantastic team and we know we must be at our best to beat them.

“We have a couple of people on holiday, so it will be a good chance for the incoming players to take their chance.

“We are in a fantastic position and we just need to keep being confident and continue how we are playing and if we do that it should be a good game.”

Last weekend, Hornchurch won by seven wickets at home to Southend, following a top performance with both bat and ball.

Mehad Khan continued his excellent 2018 with three more wickets and Monty Panesar (3-32) and Marc Whitlock (2-39) also chipped with good figures.

It ensured Southend were all out for 167 and Hornchurch got home in the 31st over, with Gordon adding: “Saturday was another great win. We needed to win it as well with the next couple of fixtures looking tough.

“Southend won the toss and had a bat first, but we bowled brilliantly as a unit, like we have done all season.

“Mehad got three wickets, he’s been superb this year, and Monty and Whitlock also bowled fantastically.”

After losing Jamie Sorrell for only four, Hornchurch didn’t have too many other scares as Gordon (21) and Michael Bones (33) put on a solid partnership.

Once they were dismissed, Zeeshan Khan (31 not out) and veteran Roy Smith (48 not out) showed their class to secure another victory.

Gordon added: “It was good to give Zeeshan a chance at four because he’s been very patient this season.

“He and Roy batted superbly and finished the game off and it was great to see Roy get runs.”

Last Sunday’s Vitality Club T20 competition at Potters Bar was rained off, so Hornchurch will try again this Sunday.

They will face Swardeston in the last-32 first and if they win that tie, will take on the winner of Potters Bar vs Osterley later in the day for a place in the quarter-finals of the event.
