Competition takes place next month

Upminster’s Robyn Hughes has been selected to represent the under-15 Saxon Tigers at the England Futures Cup this summer.

The Futures Cup is an annual four-day tournament for some of the best junior hockey players in the country, with players selected to represent their region.

Along with Tigers, Mercia Lynx, Pennine Pumas, Wessex Leopards, Caledonian Cougars and Celtic Jaguars will also take part in the event.

St Albans Hockey Club, based at Oaklands College, will host this years Futures Cup, which runs from August 23-26.

The competition will allow Hughes and other young talents to impress the national coaches, who will use the tournament to select the under-16 squad for next year.

Elsewhere, former Havering youngster Emily Defroand was part of the England squad that finished third at the World Hockey League Semifinals in Johannesburg.

England beat Argentina 3-2 in the third-place play-off on Sunday, having been beaten on penalties by the USA in the semi-finals a day earlier.
