Havering thirds were the only team to host a match as the ‘Beast from the East’ hit hockey hard last weekend.

They began well as Witham fourths visited Campion and took the lead when Richard Cast weaved his way to the top of the D to slot home.

James Hosier, Mike Gilbert, Bill Birbeck and Cast combined well in midfield, as Kulveer Mangat produced strong runs on the right.

But Witham were back on terms after the restart when a powerful short corner was deflected in by Mike Hosier and they went on to move 3-1 up.

Havering hit back when Birbeck found Luke Clarke to slot home at the near post, but they could not avoid a 3-2 defeat.

A spokesperson said: “We were so pleased we managed to get the match played as Katie Griggs was being assessed to qualify as a level one umpire and thankfully she passed.

“The club were very grateful to Campion’s school site team who assisted us in clearing the last of the snow in one corner of the pitch so the match could go ahead.”
