England’s men worked hard for their first point at the Azlan Shah Cup in Malaysia on Sunday.

After falling behind towards the end of the first quarter, they came under lots of pressure in the second session as India forced eight penalty corners.

But George Pinner produced some heroics in goal for England, along with his defenders, and Mark Gleghorne eventually got Bobby Cructhley’s men back on level terms, which proved enough for a share of the spoils.

David Condon was just off-target after four minutes, while Barry Middleton and Sam Ward also threatened before India opened the scoring on 14 minutes.

Ramandeep Singh intercepted a pass and after Talwinder Singh’s shot was saved by Harry Gibson, the loose ball was tucked away by Shilanand Lakra.

Pinner denied Gurjant Singh less than 30 seconds after replacing Gibson and produced two more stunning saves as India won a string of corners.

Middleton, Gleghorne and Liam Sanford also blocked efforts from Varun Kumar and Amit Rohidas.

Hampstead & Westminster’s Harry Martin spurned a chance to equalise and Ansell had a shot blocked, while Ward’s reverse stick effort was saved by Suraj Karkera.

Gleghorne had a short corner blocked early in the second half, then charged down an Indian corner from Rohidas, before Pinner and Henry Weir scrambled the ball clear.

England levelled on 53 minutes when Gleghorne converted a penalty stroke into the corner, after Ward’s shot was saved by Pathak, but they needed a vital last-minute save from Pinner to ensure honours finished even.

Ireland provide the opposition for England in their next match on Tuesday, with the match starting at 8am GMT and live on the FIH You Tube channel.

England: Gibson, Sloan, Gleghorne, Roper, Dixon, Middleton, Creed, Goodfield, Condon, Gall, Sanford. Subs: Pinner, Willars, Weir, Martin, Griffiths, Ward, Ansell.
