Brentwood School golf captain Max Porteous is a fairway closer to realishing his dreams after winning the under-16 and under-18 Essex Boys’ Championships – making school history.

The 14-year-old, who first picked up a golf club 10 years ago, was in sizzling form to take both competitions at Burnham-on-Crouch by storm.

Porteous was the only competitor to shoot under par over the 36 holes, taking the titles by four shots, and Brentwood School’s head of golf Mr Chris Long said: “This is a remarkable achievement by somebody so young, and is the first time the competition has been won by a pupil from Brentwood.”

Porteous is a member at Thorndon Park, where he has a handicap of 3.5, and also Warley Park, where he started playing competitively some five years ago.

Proud mum Liz Porteous added: “Max started playing golf at the age of four while we were on a family holiday at a golf resort in Portugal. He just picked up a club and discovered he had a natural swing.

“He was also encouraged by watching his dad, John, play golf – although not to the same standard!”

The youngster hopes to attend a US college with an eminent golf team and plays or practises at least six times a week during the school holidays while during term time he can be found on the green around school commitments.

The Brentwood School golf team is going from strength to strength having reached the Independent Schools Golf Association (ISGA) final two years in a row - despite having one of the lowest average ages of all the teams taking part.
