Tennis squad defy the odds

Havering’s tennis squad made light of their numerical disadvantage to qualify for the London Youth Games finals.

One player short at the qualifying event at Redbridge, the 2011 champions went into each tie one rubber down before even hitting a ball.

But they dug deep to see off Camden, Westminster and Wandsworth and win their group to book a trip to Crystal Palace next weekend (June 30).

Erica Izatt and George Gray produced some stand-out performances in their one-set singles matches to keep hopes alive.

Izatt won a sudden death tie break against Camden, while Gray had to break serve at 5-4 down to stay alive, then went on to win the set 7-5.

Cranston Park members and Coopers pupils Harry Cannons and Adam Gray completed the Havering squad, which was captained by Peter Bruce.
