Ford club member wins UK Schools gold

Matthew Kavanagh of Ford Judo Club won gold at the UK Schools Games in Sheffield.

Kavanagh represented Havering Sixth Form College and England at under-73kg, as all four Home Nations selected two players in each weight.

The event is designed to mirror the Olympics, giving youngsters a taste of what it feels like to compete in a multi-sport event.

And Kavanagh, returning to full fitness after a shoulder injury, maintained his good progress on the mat.

Having won gold at the Kent International Championships at Crystal Palace, Kavanagh came through his pool with three successive wins, all by maximum points.

He then met a strong Scottish opponent in the semi-finals and, with quiet confidence, went on to win again by maximum points.

The final was an anti-climax as his rival, England’s other representative withdrew with a shoulder problem.

But Kavanagh had done enough to impress the England coaches and will look to continue his climb up the rankings this weekend ahead of the National Championships next month.
