A team of five boys and five girls took part in a 90 metre swim, 800m bike ride and 800m run at Brentwood’s Hutton Woodlands Manor.

And Leila was third out of 120 girls and fifth overall in seven minutes 38 seconds, despite having a major back operation in April, while Eleni – who suffers from cystic fibrosis – finished 15th in 8.23.

Teacher Mike Christiansen said: “The event was fantastic, with the children showing huge amounts of courage, perseverance and determination.

“It was a magnificent achievement by Leila and an amazing feat by Eleni. Her mum said ‘she continues to kick CF’s butt!’”

The Gidea Park College squad finished 11th overall out of 23 competing schools.
