West Ham United have sacked manager Slaven Bilic after just over two years in the job.

The 49-year-old’s final match was the 4-1 home defeat by Liverpool on Saturday and after Everton won on Sunday, the team were plunged into the bottom three.

The club made a statement this morning to say: “West Ham United can confirm that Slaven Bilic has today left his position with the Club.

“The Chairmen and board of West Ham United would like to place on record their thanks and gratitude to Slaven and his team for their services over the past two-and-a-half years, but believe a change is now necessary in order for the Club to move forward positively and in line with their ambition.”

Bilic made a superb start to life at Upton Park as his team finished seventh in their final season at the stadium, but it was a position that should have been higher in reality.

Injuries, poor signings and the effect of the new stadium did not help his cause the following season and in the end a strong finish enabled them to come a creditable11th.

But more money was spent in the summer and a better campaign was envisaged, only to start with three away games and three defeats because of the unavailability of the London Stadium.

Bilic has not been helped by circumstances, but he has made many mistakes too and his underperforming squad have let him down.

To be thumped at home by Brighton and Liverpool and yet win at Spurs in the League Cup suggests that they are carrying too many passengers in the team.

The statement continued: “West Ham United can confirm that Bilic’s coaching assistants Nikola Jurcevic, Edin Terzic, Julian Dicks and Miljenko Rak have also left the Club with immediate effect.”

That suggests that Chris Woods may take charge on a temporary basis although Academy coach Terry Westley would be another alternative.

“The Club’s search for a new manager to take West Ham United forward is underway and an announcement regarding Bilic’s successor is expected to be made over the coming days,” concluded the statement.

That may have been an even quicker announcement, but the adverse reaction to the prospect of David Moyes coming in, may well have made the board think again.

Apparently, West Ham approached six other managers before sacking Bilic, but each of them told the club that they would not come until the end of the season.

Bilic’s record was 111 games, 42 wins, 30 draws and 39 losses, not a bad effort by any standards, but West Ham’s expectations are higher these days and for the team to be in the relegation zone was simply not good enough.

On a personal note, Bilic always came across as a genuine, approachable and knowledgeable football manager.

He will be missed, but this is all about the results and they simply haven’t been good enough.
