Bryon Coomer under-19s College Trophy final: Rushcroft Foundation School 3 Shenfield High School 1
Shenfield High School suffered defeat in the final of the Bryon Coomer under-19s College Trophy last week with Rushcroft Foundation School winning 3-1.
Jake Willis’ penalty gave the holders of the competition some hope, but they couldn’t get back on level terms at the Brentwood Centre Arena and were beaten.
Shenfield made a poor start in the final of a tournament they won in 2015 and found themselves behind early on.
Oshun Lewis hit a quick-fire brace to put Rushcroft in control with just 18 minutes played in the final.
But the holders were given a lifeline just before the half an hour mark when Morgan Seaman was fouled in the penalty area.
Willis stepped up and converted the resulting spot-kick to give Shenfield renewed optimism in the final.
Tommy Smith tested the Rushcroft goalkeeper before Harry Gibbs glanced a header wide just half time.
Peter Balman had a great opportunity just before the break, but fired over after Seaman’s neat cut back.
It would prove costly as Rushcroft made it 3-1 just three minutes into the second half despite the best efforts of Shenfield goalkeeper Oliver Langford.
He saved Lewis’ initial strike but Lewis Grant was on hand to follow up and restore the two-goal cushion.
It was nearly 4-1 to Rushcroft after, but Langford made two vital stops from Kye Mitchell and Grant.
Willis nearly reduced the arrears again as his powerful strike smashed the crossbar before going over, but it wasn’t to be.
The 2015 winners of the competition had to settle for a runners-up spot this time with Rushcroft celebrating come the full time whistle.
Shenfield High School squad: Oliver Langford, Jacob Nibbs, Brandon Williams, Tommy Smith, Mitchell McCabe, Peter Balman, Joshua TeWhare, Peter Oola, Morgan Seaman, Jake Willis, Jordan Manzo, Jack Richardson, Alex Seth, Jacob Evident, Joe Shanahan, Harry Gibbs.
