Shenfield High also reach semi-finals

St Martin’s, Hutton booked their place in the semi-finals of the National Under-16 Cup with a 2-0 win over Cherwell yesterday.

And they join local rivals Shenfield High School in the last four on March 13, following their tense penalty shoot-out success at St Birinus School (Oxford) on Tuesday.

A first half goal from Chris Skingley, from Tom Lapslie’s excellent pass, put Saints ahead yesterday.

And Cherwell missed a good chance to equalise early in the second half, before Lapslie rounded the keeper to slot home a decisive second Saints goal 10 minutes from time.

Meanwhile, Shenfield twice fell behind at St Birinus, but goals from Jack Morgan and captain George Pratt forced extra-time.

The visitors had the better of the extra period, but could not find a winner and the tie went to spot-kicks.

Shenfield netted their first four penalties before Sam Cole pulled off a vital save to clinch a 4-2 success, meaning Tommy Oliver did not have to take his spot-kick.

Shenfield will face Liverpool’s West Derby School for a place in the final, while Saints must wait to learn the outcome of the quarter-final tie between St Cuthbert’s High School (Newcastle-upon-Tyne) and National School (South Notts).
