Velocity Trophy quarter-final: Wingate & Finchley 0 Billericay Town 1

Wingate & Finchley’s hopes of silverware in the Velocity Trophy were ended last night following a 1-0 home defeat to Billericay Town.

A second-half penalty from Jake Robinson saw the in-form Essex club qualify for the semi-finals of the competition.

Billericay threatened early on at the Maurice Rebak Stadium, but Shane Gore did well to tip over Sanchez Watt’s free kick in the 10th minute.

From the resulting corner, Wingate had to be alert with the ball heading towards their goal before Nathan Mavila cleared off the line.

A difficult start for the hosts was compounded in the 23rd minute when Ola Williams was forced off and had to be replaced by Leyton Orient loanee Charley Barker.

The visitors continued to press, although were finding it hard to break down Wingate as half time approached.

Billericay did threaten again in the 35th minute as Gore saved Watt’s shot, but Billy Bricknell’s follow up effort appeared to be heading in before Sean Cronin got back to clear and ensure it was level at the interval.

Wingate started strongly after the restart and Alan Julian was called into action two minutes into the second half when Quentin Monville’s cross was pushed away with Reece Beckles-Richards waiting to slot home.

Nine minutes later and the home side went close again with Rob Laney heading a Beckles-Richards cross over the crossbar.

The visitors responded, however, and were awarded a penalty just past the hour mark and Robinson made no mistake from the spot.

Afolabi Obafemi was introduced by Wingate five minutes later as they looked to find a way back into the game.

Despite pushing Billericay in the dying exchanges, the visitors were able to win another penalty in stoppage time.

Robinson put this one wide though, but it didn’t affect the final result as the Essex side progressed into the semi-finals.
