Ryman North: Hornchurch 3 Dereham Town 0
Tobi Jospeh hit a brace as Hornchurch brought their four-match losing run to an end with a victory over Dereham Town in Ryman North League.
Urchins came into the game focused on their league hopes, having been knocked out of three cup competitions in just over a week, including an 8-0 thumping by Colchester in the Essex Senior Cup.
Dereham arrived at Bridge Avenue with a clear game-plan and were happy to allow Hornchurch to play in front of them without committing men forward.
But the lack of runners in support of captain Luke Tuttle meant that Hornchurch were able to win back possession far too easily when attacks broke down.
However, although Urchins thoroughly controlled opening exchanges, the first 25 minutes passed without either goalkeeper being seriously tested.
A handful of blocked shots provided only brief moments of excitement for the spectators, with an ugly foul from Dion Frary resulting in the first yellow card for the visitors.
The best chance of the half came when George Purcell turned smartly on the edge of The Magpies box before letting fly and drawing a save at full stretch from Dereham goalkeeper Will Viner.
A very late tackle from Jack Frohawk earned him a place in the book before the half-time whistle blew with the score still deadlocked at 0-0.
Dereham’s well drilled defence will have been happy with their work after blunting the home side’s creativity in attack.
But the second half began at a far livelier pace for Hornchurch, although it was Dereham who created the early chance as Ryan Crisp received the ball fortuitously on the left hand side of the area, asking the first real question of Sam Mott with a low shot from an acute angle.
Hornchurch’s persistence eventually paid off when Joseph managed to burst through the Dereham back line after receiving the ball from Purcell in the 55th minute and, with only the keeper to beat, he made no mistake, slotting the ball calmly under him to give Urchins a well-deserved lead.
Dereham, having produced few moments of quality, were now forced out of their own half and an excellent advantage from the referee saw Hornchurch’s attacking trio closing down on their defence.
Purcell delivered out wide to David Knight who put in an excellent low cross, leaving Joseph to steer his shot inside the back post for his second goal in the space of five minutes.
With the away side’s resilience broken, the match descended into a series of tired and petulant fouls, resulting in yellow cards for both Dereham’s Matthew Howard and Hornchurch’s Alex Bentley.
Mott was forced into a good save from a deflected Tuttle shot before Hornchurch sealed the victory in the 80th minute when a corner pinballed inside the area before falling to Dave Collis in a central position and he sidefooted home with the assistance of the post.
Victory leaves Hornchurch in fourth place, seven points behind leaders Cray, who drew at Harlow, with four matches in hand.
Urchins travel to Barkingside next weekend where they will be looking to make up more ground in the promotion race.
